Avulsed Unearth the Roots of Scandinavian Death Metal on ‘Nordic Embryogenesis’
Spanish death metal veterans Avulsed are reaching deep into the crypt for their next release.
On September 9, 2026, the band will unleash Nordic Embryogenesis through Xtreem Music, a full-length tribute to the early Scandinavian death metal underground that helped reshape extreme music forever.
Formed by vocalist Dave Rotten thirty-five years ago, Avulsed have spent decades carving their name into the Spanish death metal scene through records like Stabwound Orgasm, Gorespattered Suicide and 2025’s Phoenix Cryptobiosis. Their latest project turns that reverence outward, resurrecting songs from the obscure demos, cult EPs and forgotten corners of the Nordic underground.
And they went deep.
Rather than leaning on the familiar staples every death metal fanatic already owns, Avulsed dug into material from bands including Funebre, Carbonized, Adramelech, Macabre End and Crematory.
The album opens with “Expunging Mortalities,” originally appearing on Finnish band Funebre’s second demo from 1990. From there, Nordic Embryogenesis moves through tracks like Carbonized’s “No Canonization,” Adramelech’s “Heroes In Godly Blaze,” Macabre End’s “Spawn Of Flesh” and Crematory’s “The Exordium.”
The idea here is excavation rather than modernization.
Avulsed preserve the primitive atmosphere, grime and raw violence that defined those early recordings, approaching the material like sonic necromancers pulling buried riffs back into the world. The result aims straight for that late-'80s and early-'90s underground energy: cavernous guitars, diseased atmosphere and death metal stripped down to bone.
Dave Rotten delivers the vocals with the same guttural conviction that has powered Avulsed for decades, while the band treats the source material with obsessive attention to its original character.
Avulsed also rolled the project out piece by piece over recent months, releasing one track digitally each week. Heard together as a complete album, those individual excavations become something larger: a tribute to an era when death metal still felt dangerous, underground and genuinely alien.
Alejandro Lobo mixed Nordic Embryogenesis, with mastering handled by Davide Billia, whose credits include Beheaded, Golgotha and Unbounded Terror. Rudi “Gorgingsuicide” Yanto created the appropriately grotesque cover artwork.
NORDIC EMBRYOGENESIS arrives September 9 through Xtreem Music on CD, 12-inch vinyl, cassette and digital formats.
